Restaurants Prepare for Statewide Styrofoam Ban

Oct 05, 2020

Several new laws are now in effect across the state: One of the laws is a statewide ban on polystyrene in Maryland, the first of its kind in the nation.

The styrofoam ban was supposed to go into effect July 1, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, the state postponed the implementation until Oct. 1. But restaurants say that’s not long enough.

“Waste is not going to be reduced by this piece of legislation. Consumers will now just buy another disposable product and we’ll have the exact same issue we’re trying to address,” Cailey Locklair, president of Maryland Retailers Association, said.

Locklair says this was a missed opportunity for the state to invest in infrastructure to recycle materials already on the market.
