Business Coalition Campaigns Against Maryland’s Proposed Digital Ad Tax

Business advocates haven’t had much luck in recent years convincing the General Assembly to sustain Gov. Larry Hogan‘s vetoes of what they consider to be onerous laws.


They hope things will be different in 2021.


A coalition of businesses, chambers of commerce and other organizations, which calls itself Marylanders For Tax Fairness, is seeking to stop the General Assembly from implementing a new tax on digital advertising services. The group recently launched a website and is circulating a petition calling for lawmakers to sustain a veto by Gov. Larry Hogan.


The General Assembly approved the digital ad tax in the closing days of the truncated legislative session earlier this year. Democrats passed the ad tax by adding it onto a bill increasing Maryland’s tobacco tax during the amendment process. The ad tax would potentially raise $250 million in the first year of implementation, with the proceeds intended to be used for a massive reform of Maryland’s public education system planned by lawmakers.
